What to see in London in 4 days
London is expensive at almost everything except what matters most: the major museums are free. With that and a good split by area, four days go a long way.
Day 1: Westminster and the river
Big Ben, the abbey, then walking the Thames bank down to the London Eye. It's the stroll that orients you. If you're going inside the abbey, get a timed ticket; from outside it's free and still worth it.
Day 2: museums
The British Museum and the National Gallery are free and among the world's best. Take one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and don't try to see them whole: they're endless. In between, wander Covent Garden and Soho.
Day 3: markets and neighbourhoods
Borough Market to eat, Camden or Shoreditch for atmosphere, Notting Hill at the weekend for the Portobello market. The most enjoyable day, and the one best done without a plan.
Day 4: parks or a day trip
Hyde Park and Kensington for a quiet day, or a train trip to Oxford, Cambridge or Windsor, all under ninety minutes away.
Transport: how not to overpay
Don't buy single tickets. Pay with a contactless card or your phone directly at the gates: the system works out the daily cap itself and won't overcharge, with no travel card needed. Use the same card throughout so the totals tally.
What you must book
Paid timed attractions like the London Eye or the Tower of London, and any West End show. Free museums sometimes ask for a no-cost reservation in peak season.
Budget
Between 110 and 170 euros per person per day. Accommodation is what drives it up: sleep outside Zone 1 and use the Tube. Eating at markets and pubs at lunchtime brings costs down considerably.
Don't forget the ETA
Since 2025 EU citizens need an electronic travel authorisation to enter the UK, and since 2026 it must be approved before boarding. Apply as soon as you have flights.
